Buying Fine Jewelry, Compared
| Dimension | Solifacet | Facebook Marketplace |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Marketplace for fine jewelry and precious stones; holds no inventory and sells nothing of its own. | Peer-to-peer classified advertising service and open social commerce platform. |
| Jewelry-specific focus | Exclusively dedicated to fine jewelry and precious stones. | General consumer classifieds spanning vehicles, real estate rentals, electronics, furniture, and personal items. |
| Seller vetting | Sellers are vetted by Solifacet before they are approved to list pieces. | No seller vetting; anyone with an active personal Facebook profile can post items for sale. |
| What gets checked before the piece lists | The founder personally inspects each piece in person to confirm it exists, matches its description, and is in the stated condition, and checks any certificates or paperwork. (Small accent stones and melee diamonds are not individually lab-inspected). | Listings are screened only by automated platform community standards; items are never physically inspected or verified for authenticity. |
| Buyer protection / what happens if something is wrong | Founder-led resolution handled personally case by case, including covering costs out of pocket when warranted, backed by confirmed written purchase terms. | Purchase Protection applies only to shipped orders paid through Facebook's onsite checkout up to $500; transactions conducted in person or via cash, Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal carry zero protection. |
| Returns | 3-day inspection window from delivery for approved claims (counterfeit or materially not-as-described, with valid proof). No change-of-mind returns. | No standardized return policy; transactions are generally final sale unless an individual seller voluntarily chooses to issue a refund. |
| Certificates / provenance | Certificates and supporting documentation are checked by the founder when applicable before listing. | Unverified; any appraisals or grading papers pictured in listings are uploaded by individual users without independent verification. |
| Human support | Customer service is handled directly and personally by the founder, not a ticket queue or outsourced support team. | No dedicated phone or real-time support staff; user inquiries are handled through automated Meta Help Center workflows. |
| Shipping & insurance | Sellers ship within 48 hours of sale. Shipments are insured through the carrier, with tracking; shipping is paid by the buyer and included in the piece's price. | Most sales occur as unverified local cash pickups; shipped checkout orders use standard carrier labels generated by the seller without guaranteed jewelry insurance. |
| Price transparency | The price you see is the price you pay, with no added buyer fees or hidden checkout surcharges. | Prices are posted by individual users and frequently negotiated via Messenger; shipped checkout orders add sales tax and shipping fees. |
How verification works at Solifacet
Before a piece lists, the founder personally goes to the seller, inspects the piece in person — it exists, it matches its description, its condition is as stated — and checks the certification/papers that come with it.
What we do NOT do (yet), stated plainly: melee diamonds and small accent stones are not individually lab-inspected. Inspecting each one costs more than the margin on the piece, so the industry standard is not to verify those individually. We do not claim otherwise anywhere.
If a piece turns out not to be as described, Solifacet handles it personally, case by case, and makes it right — including covering costs out of pocket when the situation warrants it. Customer service is founder-led, not a ticket queue.
What we're building (label this clearly as PLANNED, not current): a verification partner facility that will inspect every piece before it ships. Do NOT present this as already in place.
Where Solifacet differs
Facebook Marketplace offers immense geographic reach and a convenient platform for finding local secondhand items and negotiating directly with nearby sellers. However, Facebook Marketplace does not vet sellers, inspect items, or authenticate jewelry, and in-person cash or peer-to-peer app payments have no buyer protection whatsoever. Even shipped checkout purchases are capped at $500 under Meta's Purchase Protection policy, leaving high-value jewelry transactions unprotected. Solifacet eliminates this uncertainty by vetting all sellers, having the founder physically inspect each piece and verify paperwork in person before listing, and providing insured carrier shipping with direct founder accountability.
Questions & Answers
Solifacet vs Facebook Marketplace — what's the difference?
Facebook Marketplace is a peer-to-peer classifieds service where anyone can post items without verification, and local transactions have no buyer protection. Solifacet is a dedicated fine jewelry marketplace where the founder personally inspects every piece in person before it lists and oversees the entire transaction.
What does 'verified' mean on Solifacet?
On Solifacet, verified means the founder has traveled to the seller, personally inspected the physical piece to ensure it exists, matches its description, and reflects its stated condition, and reviewed its accompanying certificates or documentation. It does not mean every melee diamond or tiny accent stone has undergone independent lab analysis, as those stones are not individually tested.
What is Solifacet's return policy?
Solifacet provides a 3-day inspection window following delivery for approved claims involving counterfeit items or material misrepresentation, supported by valid proof. Change-of-mind returns are not accepted, as purchase terms are confirmed in writing prior to payment.
Are jewelry purchases protected on Facebook Marketplace?
Protection on Facebook Marketplace is limited. Purchase Protection applies only to shipped orders completed through Facebook's onsite checkout, with coverage capped at $500. Purchases completed via local pickup, cash, Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, or off-platform payment methods carry no buyer protection.
